Welcome

Hopeful change in an uncertain world

In an everchanging world, it can sometimes feel difficult to hold on to hope for nature. Yet across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, there are real reasons to feel positive.

Our latest State of Nature Reserves conservation report offers an important snapshot of the health of wildlife across our nature reserves. These places matter enormously. They are strongholds for wildlife and vital sources of recovery, helping nature spread back into the wider countryside as opportunities arise.

The report also shows the impact your support makes possible. Despite growing pressures from the climate crisis, inappropriate development and changing land use, 73% of our reserves are now considered to be in good or recovering health. Our meadow habitats continue to perform strongly, with 91% in healthy condition, while our heathland reserves are improving rapidly, rising from 0% in good condition in 2022 to 12% today. We also continue to care for around half of all reedbeds across our three counties, protecting some of our most important wetland habitats for wildlife.

For me, this report is evidence that positive change is possible, even in challenging times.

I’m continually inspired by the people helping make that happen. From the volunteers supporting our Crowthorne Swift High Street project to the young people stepping forward to help nature in their communities – both featured in his issue, there is a growing determination to create more space for wildlife in everyday life. Thank you for being part of it. Together, we are creating the conditions for nature to thrive.

If you can join us for the AGM on 14th November, I’d be delighted to see you there! Visit the AGM booking page to secure your place.
